SEA DOGS NOTCH A WIN FOR BREAST CANCER

October 26, 2012,

SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the Prince Edward Island Rocket 4-3 in overtime at Harbour Station for Pink-in-the-Rink night in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday night. The 4,018 fans in attendance saw the Sea Dogs raffle off the game-worn jerseys in support of Breast Cancer research.

Kevin Gagne scored the overtime winner and Stephen MacAulay, Jakub Izacky and Olivier LeBlanc each scored for the Sea Dogs who pulled to 7-7. Sebastien Auger made 35 stops while facing 38 shots for the win.

Josh Currie scored two and Ben Duffy added a single for the Rocket with Antoine Bibeau making 34 saves on 38 shots in the loss.

The fans were treated to some rough stuff early as Michael Mastrangelo dropped the gloves for a match up against Patrick MacGrath. Mastrangelo landed some solid punches before both players toppled over in front of the penalty boxes.

After the Sea Dogs killed off a Rocket power play, the Dogs had a man advantage of their own which saw almost constant play in the Rocket zone. Bibeau held his own between the pipes to keep things scoreless.

Auger made some spectacular saves of his own during a brief 4-on-4 period to keep things even at zero, despite the Sea Dogs being outshot 14-10 in the opening frame.

The Sea Dogs got a long stretch of power play time and had several chances in the second half which lead to the goal by MacAulay at 7:48. Aidan Kelly saw Jason Seed open at the point, where he wristed a shot on Bibeau. The rebound was sitting nicely in front of MacAulay where he tapped in his seventh of the year, all of which have been scored on the power play.

Izacky made a brilliant play to intercept a blue line pass and head down the ice on a breakaway. Very patient, Izacky out-waited Bibeau and sniped the top left corner over Bibeau’s shoulder.

The Rocket broke the goose egg with Auger down and out after making the initial save. Duffy put PEI on the board 54 seconds into the final frame.

LeBlanc restored the Sea Dogs two goal lead at 2:33 with another rebound marker scored from just to the left of Bibeau.

The Rocket pulled even with two goals off the stick of Currie. His first came at 4:43 of the third off a strange play that saw a very high rebound fall behind Auger, while his second goal was scored at 7:05.

Marcus Cuomo had a great chance for his first of the year off another Bibeau rebound, but the goaltender slid across to rob the Sea Dog rookie.

The game would end tied 3-3 and head to overtime. Just past the halfway point of the extra frame, the Sea Dogs took the win on a goal off the stick of Gagne at 2:44.

The Sea Dogs return to action on Saturday night when the Chicoutimi Sagueneens come to Harbour Station for an afternoon contest. It’s a combination of events with the first CAA Sunday Fun-day, Halloween Night and Mascot Night taking place. Fans are encouraged to wear their Halloween best for the game. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station box office, online at tickets.harbourstation.ca or by phone at 657-1234.
